Question of the Day

We all get smarter with age (thank goodness!), so what advice would you give to your younger self?

  1. I'd give myself three messages. The first would be not to expend enormous energy on the small crisis of the moment. This argument will pass. The party I'm not going to will not be the only party in the world ever. He is not the love of your life.

The second is that everyone, and I mean EVERYONE... is also faking it. People of all ages have no idea what they're doing, and are afraid and shy inside. That elegant, gorgeous girl you envy with all your heart? She's terrified. That silent, brooding bloke? He feels awkward and doesn't know what to say.

And thirdly, keep trying. All the best things take practise, perseverance and sheer pig-headed stubbornness. Don't give up. You are learning. It will come.

    1. Well said, Rosie! That reminds me of a conversation I had years ago with a friend who was the head of an investment department for one of the world's biggest banks. He said "I was in a meeting today and half way through saying something I looked around and realised everyone was looking at me like I was The Oracle. I have no idea what I'm talking about. I just hope they never figure that out!"

  2. I wish I knew that the more you value yourself the more others will value you. I focused so much on what I wasn't that I didn't appreciate what I was.

  3. Dear younger Michele, you should stop worrying quite so much about where you're going in life, and enjoy where you are in life. And while you're at it, don't waste time on any boy who doesn't think you're absolutely marvellous.

  4. Com' ere sweetheart. Remember: you are going to fly. And sparkle. And nobody will hurt you anymore. And you won't hurt anymore, and you won't be afraid, and you'll be yourself. And you will sparkle. And you'll be happy, and you will smile, and everybody will love your smile. Hold on tight, sweetheart, better days ahead, I promise you :)

  5. Hey, Younger Self, you know that hot guy you run around after, even though he stands you up and treats you badly? He's fat and bald at forty #justsaying

  6. I'd tell my younger self to spend less time wondering how to impress people (well, boys) and more time wondering whether said people were worth impressing!

    1. I wish we could give that message to all young people (and that they'd listen!) :-)
